3 · Detailed Product Description
The city of Rio de Janeiro is considered by Unesco Human Cultural Heritage in the category "Urban Cultural Landscapes". The work of Roberto Burle Marx, as a landscape artist, is closely related to this achievement. On a trip through Europe he visited the collection of Brazilian plants at the Dahlem Botanical Garden in Berlin. He immediately realized the potential of tropical flora in the application of modern landscaping by establishing a true paradigm shift by breaking with traditional European styles.
His most well-known projects include the internal gardens of UNESCO headquarters, Parque do Flamengo and Gustavo Capanema palace gardens in the center of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the famous Copacabana boardwalk. He awoke to landscaping by producing his first garden in a residence in Copacabana at the invitation of the architect Lúcio Costa. Two years later he begins to crave the first public gardens.
With its botanical-landscaping, artistic, architectural and librarian collection, the Site has become a true genetic bank including important species for the conservation of flora from the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Amazon biomes, among other tropical regions.
Burle Marx, the multiple artist, was a collector of plants and objects of art and design, among which Brazilian folk art stands out, displayed on the site where one can visit the seventeenth-century church restored by him.
