Welcome to One Sea, Many Shores!

Join us for an Online Dialogue on Ocean Plastics with PROMAR Experts from the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Colombia.

This Online Dialogue will highlight international and regional initiatives to address plastic pollution throughout its entire lifecycle, by promoting a circular economy for plastics and preventing and reducing plastics from entering aquatic environments. Accordingly, we will discuss the successes, challenges and lessons learned in reducing marine litter and promoting a circular economy for plastics in Colombia, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic during the 1st Phase of PROMAR project. In addition, we will provide an overview of the Global Plastics Treaty currently and its implications for addressing plastic pollution.

The Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea (PROMAR) project is by the German government (BMUV – the German Federal Ministry for the Environment) and implemented by adelphi and the United Nations Environment Programme’s Cartagena Convention Secretariat (CCS) from 2020 to 2026 in close collaboration with national partners in the region. The first phase of the project ran from 2020 – 2024 in Costa Rica, Colombia and the Dominican Republic and the second phase from 2024 – 2026 in the British Virgin Islands, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Saint Kitts & Nevis. The project is dedicated to the prevention of marine litter in the Caribbean Sea, facilitating local action and supporting policy to promote the circular economy for plastics, with a focus on packaging and single-use plastics. In each country, the project is implemented by a local implementing partner (a local NGO, university or research body) in partnership with a political counterpart, oftentimes the Ministry of Environment (or equivalent).
