The Transcarioca Trail crosses Rio de Janeiro from Barra de Guaratiba to Pão de Açúcar in a total of 180km. It crosses the two massifs of the city, Pedra Branca, and Tijuca, creating a forest corridor. The route has taken advantage of the pre-existing trails allowing the passage through the main tourist eco-attractions of the city, where you have the opportunity to enjoy natural attractions typical of a tropical forest in an urban environment.

The section of the Transcarioca Trail, to be traveled, is short and you can visit two waterfalls, the Cave, and the Primates, inviting to the bath. It is well signaled following the international standard with yellow arrows indicating the Transcarioca Trail and white arrows indicating the direction of the asphalt if the hiker wants to abort the walk for some reason.

The methodology used in signaling follows the standard in force on long-distance routes in Europe, North America, Argentina and South Africa among others. Long-distance trails, such as Transcarioca, exist in several countries such as the Appalachian Trail in the USA, Huellla Andina in Argentina, Hoerikwaggo Trail in South Africa and Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand.

The Monkeys Farm, which occupied the current area of the trail in the valley of the river of the same name, was expropriated by the Imperial House in 1875. The farm was crossed by a road linking the Botanical Garden to Alto da Boa Vista whose route is used today By the Transcarioca Trail. The trail is known by Dona Castorina, the name of the owner of the lands that crossed. This road was built by an English citizen named Thomas Cochrane, father-in-law of the famous Brazilian writer José de Alencar.

The diversity of fauna and flora along the trail is an inexhaustible source of experiences and emotions. There are more than 1,600 plant species. Rio de Janeiro is possibly the metropolis with the largest number of bird species. There are 511 species in Rio de Janeiro, of the 1,800 in Brazil and around 9,000 in the world. This is thanks to forests, restingas, beaches, mountains, islands, mangroves and even urban areas.

The Transcarioca congregates several units of conservation: Municipal Natural Park of Grumari; State Park of Pedra Branca; Tijuca National Park; Catacumba Municipal Natural Park; Municipal Natural Park of the Carioca Landscape; Natural Monument of the Sugar Loaf and the Urca Hills. Transcarioca, along with its route, also has access to protected areas such as the Burle Max Site, Municipal City Natural Park and the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro.

Its proximity to the city makes it easy to hike on small routes, allowing you to make inroads according to physical capacity and availability of time. The Transcarioca passes through rivers, waterfalls, lakes, historical sites, preserved stretches of the Atlantic Forest and landscapes not to be missed. It is the largest trail in Brazil and one of the longest in the world.
