HOW TO BUILD A RAINBOW BRIDGE (making communicative activities good for learning; making learning activities good for communication).

 

A few decades ago teachers felt that having students communicative in the classroom through real discussion, games and other tricks was the key to language acquisition and fluency. Learning was seen as something different – something students did ‘on the way’ to being able to communicate. But what if these two apparent ‘opposites’ could be combined and a rainbow bridge ‘between prose and passion’ could be created?

 

This seven-hour workshop, immersive and participatory, will look at a new way of designing activities to give both learning and communication ‘payoffs’.

 

Jeremy Harmer is a trainer, teacher and writer, currently working as a course designer and tutor for the online MATESOL at the New School, New York. Among his many books are. works on methodology such as the Practice of English language Teaching and How to Teach English (Pearson), coursebooks (a author and co-author) such as Coast to Coast, Touchdown (Pearson) and American Jetstream (Helbling) and extensive reading (such as The Double Bass Mystery and Solo Saxophone (Cambridge University Press).

 

Jeremy is also a practising musician, spoken word performer, and singer-songwriter.

EDUCATION DESIGN

 

In this interactive course we are going to look at the theories behind course design, lesson planning and task design. You are going to further understand the rationale behind the development of a course syllabus and the underlying principles that should inform the design of effective activities. 

 

This course is ideal for course designers and private teachers, who wish to expand their understanding of course design principles, and all classroom teachers who want to feel more empowered when adapting, selecting and  creating classroom materials.

 

Vinicius Nobre is a managing partner at Troika. He has been in English Language Teaching since 1995 and has worked as a teacher, teacher educator, academic coordinator, international examiner, education manager and content developer in a range of contexts. Vinnie is a course book writer (Project Ace and Hyperlink - both with Pearson) and has coauthored two methodology books: “Getting into Teacher Education: a handbook” with Cengage Learning, and “Teaching English Today: Contexts and Objectives” (SBS/DELI). He is a CELTA tutor and assessor, a DELTA tutor, past president of BRAZ-TESOL and member of their advisory board, a professor for the post graduation course at Estacio and a member of the New Routes Advisory Board. Vinnie has also published several articles on a variety of topics, written chapters in academic publications and spoken as a guest in many international conferences in Brazil and abroad. 

 

He graduated from PUC-Rio de Janeiro in English and Portuguese and holds an MA in Language Education from the University of Chichester. He also holds the COTE and the DELTA from Cambridge University, the Certificate in Further Teaching of Business English from the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a specialization certificate in Business Management from Fundação Dom Cabral.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING

 

After a period of low popularity in the 90s, largely due to the rise of a test-oriented, score and performance-based accountability culture in Education around the world, Project-Based Learning has made a powerful comeback. In this mini course, you will learn about Gold Standard Project-Based Learning (PBL), its essential elements and core teaching practices. 

 

This mini course will not only help you build a basic toolkit to start using PBL in your classes, but it will also help you develop a basic skill set and, most importantly, the mindset to successfully engage your learners in this empowering learning model.  

 

Clarissa Bezerra is Innovation Specialist at Casa Thomas Jefferson. She has been in English Language Teaching since 1996, having worked as a teacher and course designer at Casa Thomas Jefferson for the past 20 years. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Universidade de Brasília and a Licensure in English from Universidade Católica. Clarissa is Google Certified Trainer and Google Innovator. She is also co-leader of the Brasília Google Educator Group (GEG) and a guest lecturer and facilitator in Seminário Amplifica.

DESIGNING WRITING ACTIVITIES THAT MATTER

 

Do you feel that the writing activities in the course books you use are not always complete or relevant for your students? Do you know all the elements that an effective writing activity should contain, from the pre-writing tasks to the post-writing ones? Are you familiar with the genre approach to teaching writing and with how to design genre analysis activities? In short, would you like to be a course designer and learn how to design one of the most challenging elements in a curriculum, namely, writing activities? If so, come join this workshop.

 

We will briefly go over the current trends in the teaching of writing, analyze some samples of writing activities that encompass all the elements that a complete task should contain, and design our own activities based on the framework proposed. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to design your own activities, based on your curriculum and students’ needs. 

 

With 33 years of experience in ELT, Isabela Villas Boas holds a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Arizona State University and a Doctorate in Education from Universidade de Brasília. She is the Corporate Academic Manager at Casa Thomas Jefferson, Brasília. Her main academic interests are second language writing, teacher development, leadership, and assessment. She has presented in various local, national and international ELT conferences and published articles in journals and book chapters for over twenty years. Her latest book is Teaching EFL Writing – A Practical Approach for Skills-Integrated Contexts. She also supervises distance M.A. dissertations for the University of Birmingham and serves on the BRAZ-TESOL Advisory Council.

No matter how long you have been teaching, chances are that you’ve been told that: 

“The coursebook is just a means rather than an end in itself.” 

“It’s important to adapt the existing activities and provide extra practice.” 

“You should teach the students, not the book.”

It’s hard to argue with these general guidelines, of course, but how exactly can you put all this into practice when teaching grammar, lexis, functions and skills? 

 

In this seven-hour course, we’ll be looking at dozens of practical ways in which you can get more mileage out of the books you use so that your students can learn faster and better. 

 

Luiz Otávio Barros (MA Hons. in Applied Linguistics, Lancaster University) has been teaching, training teachers, designing language courses and writing ELT materials since 1990. Formerly academic coordinator at Cultura Inglesa São Paulo (where he was responsible for the advanced levels, as well as COTE, DOTE and DELTA tuition), head of research and development at Associação Alumni São Paulo (where he was in charge of the adult segment) and BRAZ-TESOL’s second vice president, Luiz Otávio has written several international coursebooks. He has also self-published The Only Academic Phrasebook You’ll Ever Need, available on Amazon.
