Hands-on technical workshops are offered by the Wheatland Geospatial Lab in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine.  Our workshops cover a variety of topics in geospatial science and technology.

This half-day workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to generating Enhanced Forest Inventories using commonly accepted workflows.

Lidar Enhanced Forest Inventory Demystified

This half-day workshop will explore the basics of terrain and hydrologic modeling from lidar-derived, high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTM).  You will learn where to get publicly available lidar data, how to create bare-earth DTMs, generate terrain indices such as slope and aspect maps, and perform the steps necessary for proper hydrologic modeling.  Participants will walk away with the tools and knowledge to apply the workflows used in this workshop to make terrain and hydrologic models from lidar data.

This half-day workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to Avenza Maps.  You will learn how to prepare your data, create geospatial PDFs in ArcGIS, upload them to Avenza Maps on a tablet or smartphone, and use them in a short field exercise.  We will also cover the basics of using and sharing data collected with Avenza Maps.  Participants will walk away with the tools and knowledge to apply the workflows used in the workshop to support their own projects.

This one-day workshop will explore the basics of 3D point cloud processing using tools in FUSION, Global Mapper, and ArcGIS.  You will learn where to get publicly available point cloud data, how to visualize your data, and how to create bare earth DEMs, canopy surface models, and canopy height models.  Participants will walk away with the tools and knowledge to apply the workflows used in the workshop to their existing lidar and photo-based point cloud datasets.

The half-day short course will explore recent advancements in hierarchical random effects models using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods with application and examples for statistical ecology. The focus is on linear and generalized linear modeling frameworks that accommodate spatial and temporal associations. Lecture and exercises offer an applied perspective on model specification, identifiability of parameters, and computational considerations for Bayesian inference from posterior distributions. The lectures will begin with a basic introduction to Bayesian hierarchical linear models and proceed to address several common challenges in environmental data, including missing data and when the number of observations is too large to efficiently fit the desired hierarchical random effects models. The exercises blend modeling, computing, and data analysis including a hands-on introduction to spBayes package in the R statistical environment. Special attention is given to exploration and visualization of spatial-temporal data and the practical and accessible implementation of spatial-temporal models.  Further details and required pre-workshop preparation at http://blue.for.msu.edu/umaine18
